Royal Palace of Madrid (Madrid) Information

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the key attraction of Madrid. The 18th century palace embellished with opulent features is one of the outstanding palaces of Europe worth visiting. Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic squares, the official residence of the royal family of Spain attracts numerous tourists throughout the year.

Location

The Royal Palace of Madrid is located on Bailen Street or Calle de Bailen, as it is called in Spanish. On the eastern bank of the Manzanares River, the palace is a short distance from Gran Via, a busy street in downtown Madrid. The Opera metro station is the nearest underground station. In addition, bus services to the palace are also available.

Opening Hours

The Royal Palace is open to visitors from Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm or 8 pm.

Entrance Fee

Entrance Fee is ten euros for guided tours and eight euros for visits without guides. The guided tours usually last for about 45 minutes. European Union citizens can explore the palace free of cost on Wednesdays. Entrance fee is five euros for children from 5 to 16 years of age, students and elderly people above 65.

The Royal Palace of Madrid was constructed at the site of a medieval fortress that was lost to a devastating fire in 1734. Four years after the old castle was destroyed, King Philip V ordered construction of the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace of Madrid is a stunning Baroque castle covering around 135,000 square feet of floor area. With 3,418 rooms, it is the second largest palace of Europe. Fifty rooms of the palace are accessible to visitors. Each of the room is embellished with priceless artifacts, frescos and tapestries. The throne room with walls covered with red velvet and adorned with magnificent frescos and invaluable furniture and artifacts is a fascinating room of the palace. The dressing room of Charles III, also called the Gasparini Room, named after the designer of the room Matteo Gasparini, with walls covered with embroidered silk is a popular attraction of the Royal Palace. The Porcelain Room has a lovely collection of china manufactured in the Royal Factory of El Buen Retiro. The Royal Armoury boasts of a vast collection of armour and weapons used by the Spanish royals in battles. The large collection of masterpieces of famous Spanish artists Goya, Velazquez, Caravaggio, El Greco and Rubens are displayed in the exhibition held in the palace. The Sabatini Garden and Campo del Moro are two lovely landscaped gardens attached to the palace.
